Eating Your Way to Healing, Healthy Lifestyle

Sometimes food gets in your way to healing, health and good lifestyle. When you find that food seems to cause problems rather than producing energy, it’s a perfect time to come in and explore the reasons for your situation. There are many times when the answer is simple while other times the answer is trickier to unravel. Whether it is simple or complex, Dr. Heathir commonly discovers the reasons by way of your history, in-office tests or via lab evaluations.

Some of the situations that people want investigated but not limited to are:

You may be aware of dramatic reactions like hives or breathing obstruction due to touching or eating peanuts or shellfish. However, you can develop food allergies at any time in your life to any food which can affect any place in your body, including your digestive system. The common denominator is the release of histamines into the local tissue that cause inflammation and swelling of tissue. Allergic reactions may occur within seconds, minutes, hours or days after the exposure to the allergen. Reactions may range from mild to severe to life-threatening. Carry an epi-pen if advised and certainly come in for an evaluation by Dr. Heathir to get help on diagnosing which foods to avoid and to include in your diet

Burping / Belching

When your stomach produces excess gas from incomplete digestion, the pressure pops open the top valve allowing gas to forcibly rise up your esophagus to your mouth. A certain amount of burping is normal. The abnormality is in the force and frequency or lack of control.

Duodenal Ulcer

This ulcer is situated in the duodenum coming after the stomach. The ulcer that occurs in the stomach is called a peptic ulcer. They are are both an erosion of the mucosal tissue of the stomach or duodenum. They may be without symptoms or present as gas, bloating and pain. The question is do sensations get better or worse from eating? They are most commonly caused by excess use of NSAID and/or Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and can be treated with drugs or life-style adaptations with which Dr. Heathir can help you.

This condition is the involuntary return of stomach contents to throat or mouth. This occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter inappropriately opens allowing regurgitation. You know the symptoms as heartburn and indigestion. Causations include Hiatal hernia, vomiting, obesity, pregnancy, aging. Left untreated or undiagnosed, this unfortunately can worsen.

It is a sensation of burning/pressure/pain behind the sternum. This rises through the neck/throat and often leaving an acidic/bitter food taste in the mouth. It is a symptom of acid reflux/ GERD. Timing is more likely to follow a meal, although not associated with physical activity. Usually lasts up to 2 hours and can be experienced by all ages, including infants. Common side effects are acid reflux, sour mouth, hoarseness, dry cough, difficulty swallowing. Left untreated the condition may worsen. I am available to help you to address this.

This is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. Its definition is “excessive concentrations of colonic bacteria (exceeding 100,000 microorganisms per mL) within the small intestines” (Medical Dictionary). This means that the bacteria of the small intestines has been largely taken over by those from the large intestine. This may cause malabsorption resulting in abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea. Diagnostic tests for SIBO and treatments including specific probiotics and diets for SIBO are available to you through my office.

Stomach Ulcer

This is an erosion of the mucosal tissue that lines your stomach. It is a cousin to the Duodenal Ulcer. They can exist together. OUCH! It is essential to diagnose and treat them in order to avoid complications from their advancement. See Duodenal Ulcer.
